Also known as ‘skinny jabs’, Wegovy® injections are injectable prescription medicine (POM) intended to help individuals with weight issues and assist them on their weight loss journeys.
What is Wegovy®?
Wegovy® contains an active ingredient called semaglutide, which belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Wegovy® works by increasing feelings of fullness, reducing appetite, and promoting weight loss.
Wegovy® (previously known as Ozempic®) is a weekly weight loss injection that can be administered at home. Wegovy® mimics a natural hormone found in the body that helps to increase insulin sensitivity. Insulin is a fat retaining hormone, by making the body more sensitive to insulin you will naturally release less insulin and maintain more stable sugar levels. Wegovy® will also delay the emptying of the stomach making you feel fuller for longer helping to reduce portion size and cravings throughout the day.
Who are 'skinny jabs' for?
Wegovy® is typically prescribed to individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes.
Wegovy® injections are administered once a week and are often used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a balanced diet and increased physical activity. This medication has shown promising results in clinical trials, leading to significant weight loss in many patients, but it may also have side effects and is not suitable for everyone. As with any prescription medication, it should be used under the guidance and supervision of a healthcare provider.

Everyone needs to start on the beginning dose of 0.25mg. This is to allow time for the body to get used to the Wegovy®. Each month your dose can be increased, some people will find the effects of the lower doses very effective and will not need to go all the way through to the strongest doses

The same formula was created under the name Wegovy® to be licenced for weight loss. Wegovy® was released in the UK late 2023 and has replaced Ozempic® for the use of weight loss medication.
